Food for life

What is here Krishna Food For Life?

“Hare Krishna Food For Life” as a project was inspired by events in 1974 when ISKCON founder, Srila Prabhupada saw a group of village children fighting with dogs over scraps of food. Being very upset by what he witnessed, he turned to his students and said, “No one within ten miles of a temple should go hungry. I want you to immediately begin serving food.” In response to his plea, members of ISKCON and volunteers were inspired to expand that original effort into a global network of kitchens, cafes, vans, and mobile services, all providing free sanctified vegetarian food in a diversity of locations around the world. Since that day, Food for Life has grown into the world’s largest vegetarian food relief program.

Srila Prabhupada says, “The Krishna Consciousness movement is based on this principle chant Hare Krishna as much as possible, and distribute prasadam. If we believe that Krishna is providing and maintaining everyone, then why should we be misers? This means losing faith in Krishna, and thinking that we are the doers and suppliers. We are confident that Krishna will supply! Let the whole world come, we can feed them.” “Simply by liberal distribution of pradasam and sankirtana, the whole world can become peaceful and prosperous.”

“Food For Life” Global is an international non-profit charitable organization that provides plantbased foods in over 60 countries around the world, for malnourished people; people in disaster areas; wherever there is a need, they provide it. "Another important building block for new democracy is the love and goodwill we show to each other. That is the spirit of Masakhane, of bringing one another together. It is also the spirit of today’s festival organized by Food for Life."

— Nelson Mandela, Durban
Food For Life’s mission is to bring about peace and prosperity in the world through the liberal distribution of sanctified vegetarian meals prepared with love and devotion. Further to this, Food For Life meals are sanctified, acknowledging that the Earth’s resources are not ours to take or exploit as we like, we are simply stewards and servants, reliant on and thankful to the ultimate source of all. This blessed food is known as prasadam.

“Hare Krishna Food For Life” program is an important activity of ISKCON Calgary. Food for life is a unique free food distribution program, which simultaneously satisfies the body by providing first class vegetarian meals for everyone. And it satisfies the soul because the food is prepared by temple devotees and offered to Lord Krishna before it is distributed. Thus it becomes Krishna prasadam, spiritual food that nourishes body and soul.

ISKCON Calgary is serving prasadam in Calgary Drop in Centre and Mustard Seed for several years, and serves up to 600 plates of prasadam in each event and cost is about $600. Also, Food for Life served prasadam in 2013 to Calgary flood affected people and flood relief volunteers.
